Anyone who knows Rob and Denise Roseff knows how much they love the City of Manitowoc, and how much they do to help make it the best city it possible. One way they have done that is through the Gumby’s Club for a Cure Golf Outing which took place this past weekend.
In lieu of in person donations this year, they held a Facebook Live Telethon, which Mayor Justin Nickels was on to honor the Roseffs. He said that after last year’s Golf Outing, City Officials began talking about how they could honor Gumby and his wife for everything they do. “I think back to when I first met you guys probably 15 years ago,” Mayor Nickels recalled. “You were advocating for the Aquatic Center. You were huge supporters, volunteering and getting funds raised for that. Since then…I think I have seen you every year at Heart-a-Rama, donating your time and talents, and of course what you started here.”
A couple of years ago, the City of Manitowoc began awarding deserving members of the community with the Tom Drill Volunteer of the Year Award, in honor of Mr. Manitowoc himself, Tom Drill. Mayor Nickels said while no one can match how much Drill has done for the city, they want to honor those who “come pretty darn close.” Mayor Nickels announced that Rob and Denise have been named the 2019 Tom Drill Volunteers of the Year, while giving them a symbolic key to the city. He explained, “A key to the city is a symbol of the fact that you have done so much for this community. You basically built what we are today by your actions and your deeds.”
An emotional Rob accepted award, and expressed his gratitude. “I am truly, truly honored to receive this award on behalf of my family and myself,” he said through tearful eyes. ”You don’t do these events to get awards. You do it to help people.” Rob then told a quick story about Drill, and his selflessness. WOMT’s Lee Douglas was hosting the telethon with Gumby, and he needed a volunteer shirt. When he went to the studio last week to give him the shirt, the receptionist gave him an envelope from Tom, which contained a donation for Gumby’s Club for a Cure. “I was like ‘Oh my god! Tom Drill, the busiest guy in Manitowoc.’ The presence of him to be able to donate to our club, and then to receive this award from the City of Manitowoc with his name on it…it means a lot.”
The weekend’s event was actually the 10th annual Gumby’s Club for a Cure Golf Outing, which started As a simple outing between friends.
