Republicans are calling on Governor Tony Evers to approve a proposal for bridge loans to Wisconsin residents waiting for a decision on their unemployment applications.
The interim program would use $40 million of the $280 million remaining from the state’s federal CARES Act funds.
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development confirms more than 141,000 people are still awaiting judgment on their applications.
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke says the zero-interest, forgivable bridge loans would help people pay their bills while they wait for their unemployment benefits to kick in.
