There was a weather related apartment building fire in the city of Kiel last night.
According to Captain Kevin Voland of Kiel Fire & Ambulance, firefighters were called to 451 Clay Street shortly after 6pm for the report of a lightning strike to the 4-unit structure. Everyone who was inside the building was able to get out safely.
As fire crews pulled up to the scene, flames were visible on two sides of the structure. Personnel then knocked-down the fire on the exterior before gaining entry to the unit that had taken a direct hit. Flames were quickly extinguished but fire got into the attic & caused extensive damage.
The apartment unit with fire damage was under renovation & unoccupied at the time. Four occupants were displaced by the fire.
Mutual aid to the Kiel Fire Department came from Chilton, Elkhart Lake, New Holstein & St. Anna departments, while Kiel Police, Ambulance and New Holstein First Responders also assisted.
A dollar estimate of the damage is not available.
