Some spent fireworks appear to have been the cause of a structure fire on Manitowoc’s north side late Saturday night.
Chief Todd Blaser said in a news release Sunday that Fire Rescue crews were sent to the 900-block of North 22nd Street about 11:45pm after a caller stated flames were visible from a garage extending to the house.
Authorities were notified the garage had numerous flammables being stored inside. Firefighters arrived to quickly extinguish the blaze, but flames on the home’s exterior did travel along the eaves and into the attic.
No dollar estimate of the fire damage has been made at this time. The structure did sustain smoke and water damage while a vehicle parked outside the garage had some heat damage.
All occupants of the residence were able to safely evacuate prior to MFRD’s arrival on the scene.
The American Red Cross was contacted to provide for the needs of the family and Manitowoc firefighters received mutual aid from the Two Rivers, Silver Creek and Rockwood departments while the call was taking place.
Chief Blaser reminds citizens about the hazard that fireworks can create and the importance of a working smoke detector.
