Manitowoc Public School Superintendent Mark Holzman reacted to the decision to cancel Lincoln High School’s traditional in-person commencement ceremony, due to health concerns.
Holzman tells SeehaferNews.com, “We have such a wonderful in-person graduation ceremony with lots of tradition. We do it unique in Manitowoc. I know our students and community members look forward to the event. First it was very difficult to find a way to do it and have the approval of our health support staff.”
Holzman explained the hardest part came Tuesday morning, when he had to meet with the planning committee, and break the news. “They’re very receptive to trying to come up with a new plan,” the superintendent said. “They have been working hard on trying to do everything we can and we held out hope and put something in place in July but it just didn’t work out.”
Holzman and Lincoln Principal Lee Thennes sent a letter that stated in part, “We realize these actions do not replace the historic face-to-face graduation ceremony. However, we want you to know how proud we are of your accomplishments.”
Holzman added, “We will do our best to create an alternative graduation event that also will celebrate and honor you in a year we will always remember.”
