During the implementation of the Safer at Home order, many people took to their gardens to tune up their green thumbs. This is something that Amber Daugs at Grow it Forward knows, and her organization has teamed up with the Manitowoc Public Library to offer some tips and tricks for the at-home gardener.
This is not the first time the organization worked with the library. Amber says, “Our first two that we did, last year and the year before, we had about 50 people in attendance each time. We were looking another way to be engaged with the library, but obviously with COVID we couldn’t do in person.” Amber admits that a lot of people are still rather fearful of meeting in large groups, so she and the library staff has come up with a new way of reaching those people. “We are doing a series of six library presentations on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month,” She explained. ”They are all pre-recorded (on their Facebook page) so you can come back and visit anytime that you are available as well.”
Grow it Forward has been helping the community get their hands dirty with gardening and producing fresh vegetables for a few years now. Amber told us, “We have been a non-profit since November of 2014, and our very first project that we did in the City of Manitowoc was to build a community garden on South 14th Street.” That garden is scheduled to receive several major updates in the near future, including making half of the garden handicap accessible, and the addition of a greenhouse.
Amber also said, “Grow it Forward is on a mission to grow, teach, feed and connect our local food community.”
