Mayor Justin Nickels attended Wednesday night’s Vigil for Reconciliation and Hope at Manitowoc City Hall.
Speaking with SeehaferNews.com, he supports the peaceful protests including Wednesday Night’s vigil which aimed to shine a light on the need for change the problem of racial injustice in cities, nations and the world.
“Fortunately here in the city of Manitowoc, we’ve had peaceful protests,” he told SeehaferNews.com. “What’s happening in America is happening for a reason, but here in Manitowoc I don’t think there is any reason what so ever to cause any harm to any property or person because of what is happening around us.”
Nickels believes the respect that citizens and the Manitowoc Police Department have for one another is as strong as anywhere in America, and hopes “citizens realize with what is going on, our police officers want to help. They don’t want to go out of their way to harm. I think we have built that rapport over the years.”
Police Chief Nick Reimer told us “We (The Police Department) are an extension of our community and need to work together. We want to take the opportunities to listen to their concerns and become a part of the solution and not part of the problem.”
