The Milwaukee Common Council has unanimously approved waiving the interest and penalties owed on outstanding property tax bills in the city.
Council members say they are trying to help property owners who have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. To be eligible for the waiver the accounts must have been up-to-date on April 1st.
Mayor Tom Barrett signed the measure Monday.
It comes less than a week after the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted to let all municipalities in the county take the same step – as long as the payments are made by October 1st.
