The teachers and staff at Monroe Elementary School in Manitowoc are really missing their students, and have found a way to see them again while still remaining safe.
We spoke with Deb Vandenhouten, the English Language Teacher at Monroe, who explained that they had the idea for their Family Celebration after seeing other schools drive by their student’s homes. “We came up with the idea of doing the opposite, having the students come to us so everyone can celebrate together. Families will be coming to the school, and driving through the circle drive, waving and saying hi to their teachers. Vandenhouten explained that they have 630 feet of sidewalk around their circle drive, which allows for the staff to stand 10 feet apart.
This event will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the school located at 2502 South 14th Street. They will be attempting to spread out the traffic flow by having the families with the last names starting with the letters M through Z to come from 4:00 -5:00, while the A through L last names should come from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. Vandenhouten did say, however, “Of course it would be fine if someone can’t make it during their designated time slot if they drive through when they can.”
Vandenhouten told SeehaferNews.com that they really wanted to show the families of their students how much they appreciate all the work they have done while the schools have been shut down. “The families have been working very hard at home,” she said. “We just want to honor and celebrate that.” Vandenhouten also said they came up with a little rhyme for the students as well. “Take a break to celebrate, With a drive-thru just for you. We’re almost done. Come join the fun. It’s a big deal, Come in your automobile.”
Students have been out of school since March 16th.
