Sixth District Congressman Glen Grothman says that there has been “no restraint at all on the amount of spending” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Glenbeulah native says he is opposed to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “Heroes Act”, a $3 trillion plus pandemic relief package that the House is scheduled to vote on tomorrow.
Grothman admits that “One of the embarrassing about Congress is that we go a little shy of $1 trillion in debt every year.”
Grothman says that he expects the country will go an additional $4 trillion in debt this year due to COVID-19 spending, in addition to the Federal Reserve printing $4 trillion to buy back a multitude of debt.
He calls it a “testament to the complete financial irresponsibility of some of the people I work with.”
The “Heroes Act” includes more direct payments to Americans- nearly $1 trillion to state-local and tribal governments, a payroll tax credit, $10 billion in COVID 19 emergency grants, extended unemployment benefits, a special enrollment period in Affordable Care Act exchanges, $175 billion in food and housing assistance, and another $75 billion for testing-tracing and treatment of COVID 19.
Passage would send the bill to the U.S. Senate which leader Mitch McConnell says must include liability protection for businesses.
If passed-The Senate is not expected to take it up until after the Memorial Day recess at the earliest.
