A 51-Year-old Kewaunee woman has been officially charged in connection with stealing funds from a Kiel area business where she worked as a bookkeeper.
Karen Schwind is charged with two counts of fraud/rendering income tax return or obtain a refund with fraudulent intent.
Kiel Police Chief Dave Funkhouser turned over his investigation to the Manitowoc County District Attorney’s Office in February with a referral for criminal charges to include over 200 felony counts related to theft by virtue of employment, forgery, uttering, and fraudulent writings.
According to the criminal complaint-Schwind altered Quick Books records to make it appear as though a legitimate vendor had been paid when-in fact-the check was made payable to herself.
The complaint also stated that Schwind failed to report the income she embezzled from her employer on her 2018 and 19 tax returns totaling over $62,000 and evading nearly $3,300 in taxes.
