As mosquitoes and biting flies emerge this spring, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is reminding horse owners that it is time to vaccinate for Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile virus. It also is important to consider testing requirements for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).
While these vaccines are effective, the best way to keep your horses safe is by keeping them away from mosquitoes entirely. The DATCP says the best ways to do that is by removing items that could collect stagnant water, keeping rain gutters clear, and empty and replace water in birdbaths once per week.
More information can be found at the DATCP website.
