As temperatures rise, and the clouds drift away, more and more people will start breaking out their grills, and backyard fire pits. Grilling out and sitting around a campfire is a great way to relieve some of the stress we are all going through, but Deputy Fire Chief Greg Kadow wants to make sure everyone is doing so safely.
Kadow said in regards to outside cooking, “The big thing with the grill is to keep it at least 10 feet away from your house…and after you are done using it, let it cool before you put it away.” He also advised making sure your grill is either off your porch or is on some non-combustible materials such as brick or concrete.
When it comes to the campfires, Kadow says that “The city ordinance does say that the fire pit must be 30 feet away from the house, which includes a deck…and 20 feet from any other structure. The fire pit should be 3 feet in diameter, and you should be burning clean wood.” Kadow also said that you should always have a hose available for emergencies, or at the very least several buckets of water.
