A 48-year-old Manitowoc man was sentenced to prison today, in connection with the 2018 death of a child in the city of Manitowoc.
Manitowoc County Circuit Judge Robert Dewane sentenced Eduardo Gamez to 12 years of initial confinement to be followed by 8 years of extended supervision on charges of Chronic Neglect of a Child causing death-Party to a crime. Gamez had entered an Alford plea where he denied guilt but admitted that evidence against him would likely result in a conviction.
Gamez was arrested in July 2018 after police responded to a local hospital for a call of a child suffering from severe internal and external injuries. The child, who was in the care of Gamez and 39-year-old Jamie Schrank at the time, died later that evening. An autopsy performed on the three-year-old child determined the cause of death was complications of blunt force injuries to the abdomen.
The couple’s 5-year-old child was present at the time and also suffered injuries. Both Gamez and Schrank admitted to using methamphetamine while supervising the children.
