
On March 24th, 2020 at approximately 10:55 am, officers from the Green Bay Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding an apparently deceased male at a residence in the 2200 BLK of Imperial Lane. Upon arrival, officers located a 39-year-old male, Calvin James Barber Jr, deceased. Detectives from the department were called to investigate. It was determined that Barber had succumbed to injuries sustained by a single gunshot wound, which was later confirmed by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
During the investigation, Marcus G. Stokes was identified as a person of interest. Detectives had information that Stokes had fled to the Milwaukee area. Detectives from the Green Bay Police Department, along with the Milwaukee Police Department and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation were able to apprehend Stokes in the City of Milwaukee. He was taken into custody and remained incarcerated on unrelated warrants while this investigation continued.
Officers and detectives from the Green Bay Police Department recovered a firearm from a yard near the location of the incident. Through the investigation, detectives were able to determine that the firearm that was located was potentially the weapon used in the homicide. After further forensic examination by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, the found firearm was positively determined to be the weapon used in the homicide.
Detectives from the Green Bay Police Department worked around the clock with the Brown County District Attorney Office to investigate this crime and to help bring closure for the family of the victim.
Today, April 16th, 2020, the Brown County District Attorney’s Office formally charged Marcus George Stokes with First Degree Intentional Homicide, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Misdemeanor Bail Jumping in the death of Calvin James Barber Jr. He is currently being held at the Brown County Jail, aw aiting arraignment.
