The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as much as some people may have thought.
We spoke with Sheriff Dan Hartwig, who said they haven’t really seen any influx of calls. In fact he is seeing less and less people on the road, meaning “People are heading the warnings.”
Hartwig’s Deputies were brightening the day of some area children when they drove by their homes on their birthdays, but he says that had to be shut down. “As soon as word started getting out about it, we started getting bombarded with phone calls on it,” Hartwig stated. “We put a moratorium on it on Friday just because we were getting so many phone calls. We still have a job to do out there.”
He agrees that times have been hard for a lot of people who are stuck at home and waiting on unemployment checks. That being said, the Sheriff says we will get through this together.
The Sheriff voiced his hopefulness, stating “I’m hopeful the numbers start stabilizing here…so those restrictions can start coming down at some point.”
The Safer at Home order issued by Governor Tony Evers will be in place until April 24th, unless it is amended by the Governor.
