The two Police Officers that were involved in a fatal shootout at the Valley Transit Center in Appleton last may have received a national honor for how they responded to the incident.
The National Association of Police Organizations awarded Sargent Christopher Biese and Officer Paul Christensen the “Top Cops” award.
The duo had responded to a report of an unresponsive man on a bus at the station.
The officers, along with EMS personnel revived the man, who had overdosed, and began asking him questions.
The man became upset, grabbed a gun that was in his pocket, and began firing.
Appleton Firefighter Mitch Lundgaard, and the suspect both died in the firefight, with Officer Christensen, and a woman the suspect used as a human shield also receiving injuries.
After the investigation was completed, and the officers were deemed to have acted appropriately, Police Chief Todd Thomas praised his officers, and their heroic actions.
