Authorities in Dane County say a man accused of killing a college student in 2008 was about to be released from jail when the homicide charges were filed last week.
A judge had signed a release order for David Kahl, but he was immediately taken into custody on the homicide warrant and then transported back to Madison.
Kahl is accused of strangling and stabbing University of Wisconsin-Madison student Brittany Zimmerman to death.
She was killed in her downtown apartment after returning home from class.
A charge of first-degree intentional homicide has been filed against the 53-year-old man.
