On Saturday, March 21, 2020, just after 12:00 pm officers from the Two Rivers Police Department attempted to stop a 2010 Subaru Outback which was stolen from the city of Manitowoc. The operator, who was later identified as 34-year-old Lucas Munson from New Holstein, failed to stop. Officers pursued the vehicle into the county at which time the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office assisted. Law enforcement pursued the vehicle for approximately 24.5 miles with speeds reaching 100mph. The vehicle eventually entered an alfalfa field in the 7500 block of Village Drive within the township of Manitowoc Rapids. The operator fled from the vehicle on foot and refused to obey the officer’s commands.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig said in a news release that Manitowoc County K-9 “Keto” was deployed. K-9 Keto caught up to the operator approximately 120 yards from the vehicle and assisted with the apprehension. Lucas Munson sustained minor injuries from the “bite apprehension” and one deputy sustained an injury to his leg during the foot pursuit.
Lucas Munson was arrested for knowing fleeing, causing injury by resisting/obstructing an officer, operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, criminal damage to property, and recklessly endangering safety.
Bail was set at $5,000 cash. Conditions of Bail include that Munson not operate a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and report to the Sheriff’s Department for photos and prints. He remains in the County Jail with an initial appearance scheduled for March 30th at 9:30 a.m.
Assisting with the incident was the Two Rivers Police Department, Manitowoc Police Department, Manitowoc Fire and Rescue, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center, and PK’s Towing.
