With the Spring election coming up very soon, the League of Women Voters of Manitowoc County are preparing to host their candidate’s forums.
We spoke with Connie Hendries from the League, who said it is important that people get involved in selecting the representatives in local government because “we can actually have an impact on” them. She said the individual doesn’t have much effect on state and federal government but we do locally.
Hendries went on to praise those who put themselves out there and run for a position on a variety of local government seats. She said “it’s never really a fun process” to run for office. The League will be holding a Candidates Forum for those running for the Manitowoc County Board and it will take place on Tuesday, March 10th at 6:30 in the Council Chambers in City Hall.
Hendries is rather surprised by the sheer number of candidates, saying “I’ve never had to juggle ten candidates at one forum, and I’ve been doing this for 15 or 20 years.” The League of Women Voters have put on many candidate’s forums in the past, but this year they are changing up the format a little.
Hendries explains, “The format has been in the past that people would write questions on cards, and we would ask them at the podium. This year we are changing that. This year, we are going to have people come up and ask their own questions from the podium because there were some folks that felt like we were possibly manipulating the questions because their particular question didn’t get read.” The reason every single question wasn’t asked is that a lot of them covered the same topics, and they would either select one of them or try to consolidate all of them into one.
A second forum will be held for those running for Two Rivers City Council. That event will take place on March 19th in Two Rivers City Hall. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
