Governor Tony Evers has vetoed a series of “tough-on-crime” bills supported by Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature. The measures would have required prison officials to recommend revoking parole or probation when a person is charged with a crime, block violent offenders from taking part in early-release programs, expanded the offenses which could put children in a youth prison, and keep prosecutors from changing a charge of illegally possessing a weapon against someone convicted of a violent felony – or attempting a violent felony. Evers did sign a Republican bill imposing tougher sentences on repeat drunken drivers. He also signed off on a new contract for the Wisconsin State Patrol.
