Manitowoc’s Masquers Community Theater Group is ready to entertain the Lakeshore once again, this time with the fastest selling play in British history, “Calendar Girls”.
We spoke with Masquers Producer Paul Hacker who broke down the plot of the story for us. “It’s actually based on a true story,” Hacker explained. “It’s about some middle-aged women in England, who belong to the Women’s Institute.” One of the women’s husbands die, so the group decides to hold a fundraiser to help supply the hospital with furniture for their waiting room. The idea they came up with was…less than conventional. “The idea they came up with was to make a…ehem…naughty calendar,” Paul told us. The idea was a massive success, with the fundraiser raising 85,000 pounds, which all still went to the hospital, and contributed to a new wing being added.
Hacker also old us that the Masquers are actually in the Wisconsin History books as the longest continuously ruining community theater group in the State. He said they have been around for 89 years, and their Headquarters are located next to the Rahr-West Art Museum in the Coach House.
“Calendar Girls” will be running at the Capitol Civic Center starting tomorrow through Saturday evening. All shows will start at 7:30 PM, with tickets costing $19 for adults, and $13 for students.
