The Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors plans on discussing the possibility of becoming a “Second Amendment Sanctuary” next month. Sheriff Dan Hartwig spoke recently with SeehaferNews.com about his thoughts on the issue. He stated bluntly, “I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.” As far as the proposal, he said, “I think what it does is send a message to Madison and Washington that Manitowoc County wants to protect a constitutional right.” The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution-ratified as part of the Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791, protects the individual right to keep and bear arms. Hartwig did admit there were some faults with the current proposal. “Some of the language in there needs to be changed in my opinion,” he said, “but I’m very much in support of them supporting a constitutional right for our citizens.” Several states, counties and local municipalities have or are attempting to adopt laws or resolutions to prohibit or impede the enforcement of certain gun-control measures as violative of the Second Amendment, such as universal gun background checks. Manitowoc County Board Chairman Jim Brey received a resolution from Supervisor Don Zimmer last month but has put off the discussion with the Executive Committee until March to give residents time to voice their opinions and for supervisors to do their homework. The Executive Committee plans to meet March 5th at 5 p.m. in the County Board Room.
