Chances are you know someone that is going through cancer treatment right now, fought the battle and won, or succumbed to their cancer. American Cancer Society CEO Gary Reedy spoke with Seehafer News recently, and he said they project that 1 in 3 people will have to go through cancer treatment in their lifetime.
In order to help those people, the ACS and the American Red Cross have joined forces. As Reedy explains, “We are really coming together to raise the awareness that cancer patients use about 25% of the nation’s blood supply when they are going through their treatment.” While 25% is a rather large amount, Reedy put it in more quantifiable terms, explaining that the Red Cross estimates that “5 units of blood are used every minute of every day to help someone to get through their cancer treatment.” On top of that, Reedy said the number of people donating blood is actually quite low, with only about 3% of people donating.
Reedy said its really exciting to have “two iconic organizations like the American Red Cross that has been around for 140 years, and the American Cancer Society that’s been around for 107” working together to help fix the blood shortage problem.
