The Army Corps of Engineers are preparing for a $51.3 million repair of Sheboygan’s South Pier.
While the 147 year old structure is in need of the repairs, many are concerned about the timing of the project. With the Ryder Cup Golf Tournament scheduled to take place at Whistling Straits this summer, several people voiced their concern over the fact that the boardwalk will be essentially cut off from the out of towners that may have wanted to see it during their visit to the city.
Sheboygan’s Planning and Development Director was asked if the Corp knows about the tournament, to which he replied that they had been informed, but that if funding is not accepted now, then the money will be spent elsewhere.
A work-around was created, with the Redevelopment Authority requiring that a temporary walkway be built at the south end of the boardwalk so visitors can still have access to the pier.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
