Officials with the Madison Metropolitan School District blame a declining birthrate for an expected drop in enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year. Madison schools are expecting about 90 fewer students to be enrolled in kindergarten and a drop of about 50 students in all grades combined. The Verona Area School District is projecting a growth of about 50 students and Middleton-Cross Plains expects to gain 100. That district says it has experienced enrollment growth of one-to-three percent per year for the last decade.
