A local chiropractor said he’s received a lot of questions recently from his patients about the growing concern about the coronavirus.
As we told you earlier, Wisconsin has its’ first confirmed case after an adult was evaluated in the emergency room of UW Hospital in Madison after the person had traveled in China in the past 2-weeks.
Dr. Josh Heimerl appearing on his radio show with Lee Douglas on 1240 AM WOMT Tuesday morning said he’s read research on the 99 patients who’ve been confirmed with the virus in the medical journal Lancet.
During his research, he learned that the virus gets it’s name from it’s shape. “It has glycoproteins around it’s shell that resemble crowns, and in Latin that translates to corona.” The crown shape of there glycoproteins allow it to attach itself to other cells.
The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system, causing flu-like symptoms. Heimerl says, “it’s not a flu virus, but the symptoms are very similar.”
Dr. Heimerl said in tracking the origin of the virus from a seafood market in Wuhan China it actually came from an animal. “There is some conflicting evidence on whether it came from a bat or a snake…but that coronavirus came from an animal.”
He added we’ve seen this virus before in 2002 with the SARS epidemic and later in 2012 with the MERS.
