The Kohler Company has come to an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency and the state of California, and now they will have to pay $20 million.
This fine is due to the violations they made to the Clean Air Act and to California Law.
Not only do they have to pay the huge fine, they also have to reduce emissions by 3,600 tons and take other measures that are expected to cost $3.7 million.
A DOJ news release states that Kohler’s small spark-ignition engines, such as those found in lawnmowers, failed to pass certification applications that were submitted to the EPA and the California Air Resources Board.
The Kohler Company claims that in late 2015, they self-reported “issues related to emissions testing and compliance” and say that all engines sold since 2016 are in compliance with regulations.
