A man who led Lincoln High School boys track & field teams to a pair of WIAA State championships has died.
Earl Herbert Junior was 91.
Herbert taught and coached in Manitowoc from 1970-to-1982.
Earl and his wife of 65-years, Janet have been residing in Waupaca in recent years.
The native of Coleman, Wisconsin was a teacher and coach for over 37-years. He was honored with enshrinement into the St. Norbert College, Wisconsin Track Coaches Association and the Lincoln Wall of Fame organizations.
Former Lincoln & Marquette University standout, and former Golden Eagles Track & Field Coach, Dave Uhrich spoke to Seehafer News about Coach Herbert’s death.
“Of course he was a great coach and had a lot of State Championship teams and individuals but he was also a great person. I think that’s why people have such fond memories of him. It’s not just his success as a coach but he really cared about his athletes and I think that is why there is so much emotion about him passing away.”
Uhrich spoke about the impact Earl Herbert had on him, “Part of the reason I even got into coaching was because of him and the impact that he had on my life. When I would make decisions and how I treated my athletes and everything, I’d try to think back to the type of person and type of coach that he was and it absolutely helped me in my coaching career.”
Uhrich continued, “He’s such an inspiration because, even at 91-years old, Coach was still biking and kayaking.”
Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca assisted the family with arrangements and a private service will be held to celebrate Earl Herbert’s life and the many gifts he shared.
