Dairyland Power Cooperative plans to close its coal-fired power plant in Genoa next year.
The company issued a statement saying the closure of the 51-year-old plant along the Mississippi River will impact about 80 employees.
C-E-O Barb Nick said the decision to close is part of Dairyland’s “Sustainable Generation Plan.”
Dairyland owns and operates another coal facility in Alma, Wisconsin and there are no immediate plans to shut it down.
But Nick says that the future includes a focus on additional renewable energy and less carbon-intensive resources.
The Genoa plant is expected to close in mid- 2021.
