The Manitowoc County Historical Society has announced the schedule for its SPARK! programs for 2020. SPARK! is a free monthly program for individuals living with early-to-mid stage memory loss, their care partners, and family members. Participants are engaged in lively conversations, exhibit exploration, historic artifacts, and multi-sensory activities.
The first SPARK! program of the year will take place on February 12 from 10:45 to Noon at the Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc. The program will focus on President Abraham Lincoln and his connection to Manitowoc.
Additional programs include:
March 11: Cozy in the Kitchen. Soak in the smells of the kitchen while looking at family recipes.
April 8: In the Garden. April showers will make our gardens beautiful! Join us in learning about different ethnic gardening practices and help create an heirloom garden.
May 13: All Aboard! Follow the rails from the creation of the railroad with music, documents, and artifacts.
June 10: Say Cheese! We’ll explore the steps from milk to curd and early cheese making methods.
July 8: Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Baseball legends have called Manitowoc County their home. Learn their story and that of other baseball moments in local history.
August 12: Summer celebrations. Grab your fishing pole, accordion, and ice cream bowl for a summer picnic.
September 9: Back to School! Teachers are back in session with lesson plans, games, and more.
October 14: Put that Record On! Sing with us as we look at various eras of music, including that of local music talent Romy Gosz.
November 11: Animals of the Civil War. What role did animals have in the Civil War? There were many animal mascots for the Civil War including cats, pigs, chickens, an eagle, a camel, and dogs.
December 9: An Aluminum Christmas. Follow along with the story of the Aluminum Specialty Evergleam Tree and celebrate the Christmas season.
SPARK! programs are held monthly at the Manitowoc County Historical Society on the second Wednesday of each month at 11 am. Participants may arrive at 10:45 am for coffee and conversation before the program begins. Participants and their families are also welcome to stay after to tour the museum.
