The Mishicot School District received their first WIAA Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award for conduct displayed at last spring’s state Girls Softball Tournament at Goodman Diamond in Madison.
Todd Clark, WIAA Director of Communications, presented the award at a ceremony held during halftime of last night’s Girls basketball game between the Indians and visiting Howards Grove Tigers.
A huge crowd witnessed defending Division Four Champion Horicon defeat Mishicot for the title but it’s what they did during the trophy presentation that caught the collective eye.
As each Horicon player received their individual medal, they were greeted by a Mishicot player at home plate congratulating them on their success.
Mishicot Superintendent and High School Principal, Dr. Paul Orlich praised the athletes for their sportsmanship, saying “I can say nothing but how proud I am for how they conducted themselves.”
Head Coach Dawn Kreuger says the staff makes it a point to instill these qualities in their program but admits that the players came up with the idea of shaking the opposition’s hand after the loss.
“It’s just who they are,” she explained, “They just knew it was the right thing.”
Mishicot Athletic Director Terri Risch said they brought the community together with their run to the state tournament.
Risch added that winning the award will lay the foundation for all MHS student-athletes present and future-to abide by in truly being a winner in life.
