To the surprise of some in Manitowoc County Lake Michigan does not offer protection from tornadoes and severe weather.
That statement from Manitowoc County Emergency Management Director Travis Waack.
He used the straight-line winds from this past July as an example, saying it “knocked out power for a good number of people in the Northern part of Manitowoc County, some of them for as much as three days.”
The storms were so widespread that thousands of people were without power across the northeast region of Wisconsin.
Waack termed it a good reminder of how susceptible we are, calling it a “bit of a wakeup call.”
The Manitowoc County Emergency Management official said there are still areas up north that were doing tree cleanup causing some snowmobile trails not to be open.
He advises now is the time to consider buying a portable generator and a few cases of bottled water if you’re on a well.
