First grade students at Manitowoc’s Monroe Elementary School are watching vegetables grow ‘indoors’ before their very eyes this winter.
According to Kaila Stencil, Nutrition Educator with Manitowoc County UW Extension, a Grow Tower garden has been implemented in Mrs. Lallensack’s first grade classroom at Monroe.
She explains the hydroponic system uses only water to grow plants indoors, no soil required.
The students have planted lettuce, spinach, kale, chard and basil and the first graders were anxiously looking forward to harvesting this month.
Those first graders are able to learn about the importance of healthy eating & how plants grow. Stencil told SeehaferNews.com that the students have been measuring how tall the plants are, checking the pH (P-H) balance of the water & illustrating their observations.
The Monroe first graders are going to enjoy fresh produce right-in-their-classroom, and many will try new vegetables they’ve never tasted before.
