State Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere is teaming up with Representative Chuck Wichgers of the 83rd Assembly District to co-sponsor a bill, which aims to extend the statute of limitations for 2nd-degree sexual assault.
In a news release, the duo says that the bill would extend the statute of limitations from 10 years to 20 years. Federal standards suggest sexual assault kits should be retained for a minimum of 20-years, with a 50-year “shelf life.”
Many other states, including neighboring Michigan and Minnesota, do not have a statute of limitations for 2nd-degree sexual assault so long as there is DNA evidence.
Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault also supports the bill.
