The amazing Tom Drill was at his downtown Salvation Army hut at the intersection of South 8th and Franklin Streets last night, just like most every night.
SeehaferNews.com went out to speak with Drill, who regaled us with some stories of genuine unselfish giving here on the Lakeshore. He recalled a little kid coming up to him with a quarter. “I gave him a story about how ‘Not all kids are as lucky as you. You got enough food in your fridge? You got warm blankets? You got books? You got something under your Christmas tree?”
He then told the child about the Salvation Army Coats for Kids campaign and explained that they donated over 800 jackets. The child asked, “You mean across the state?” Drill said “No! The Lakeshore!”
Drill was ecstatic. “Phenomenal!” he exclaimed. “The kindness and the goodness of some people!”
While we were out speaking with Tom, Salvation Army executive director, Jenny Moffitt showed up to offer a warm jacket to the eccentric bell ringer.
Moffitt tells us they’re getting pretty close to their red kettle fundraising goal but, they want to go beyond that. “If we are able to do that we may be able to hire more staff so that we can be better equipped to offer programs and services,” Moffitt explained.
She also told us that they will have people out ringing the bells to raise funds until five p.m. on Christmas Eve.
