The Manitowoc County Recycling Center issued a statement yesterday, reminding citizens that they do not accept ashes at their dumpsite.
Jon Reisenbuechler the Operations Manager of the Recycling Center said in the statement that the reason for this is twofold.
“First, even if ashes seem cool they often still contain embers that can reignite and start fires,” he explained.” This is especially true in windy, dry conditions when they are piled amongst dry leaves.”
The second reason was due to the chemicals that could be contained within the ashes.
He said, “we have no way to know if they came from clean wood, treated lumber, household trash, or worse.”
The best thing to do with your ashes is to use them at your property or thoroughly douse them in water and let them sit at least a month before taking them to the landfill.
