The Manitowoc County Board is scheduled to vote on the 2020 budget tonight, during their regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the Heritage Center on Michigan Avenue in Manitowoc.
County Executive Bob Zigelbauer’s proposed spending plan is nearly
$71.6 million which is a slight decrease from the approximate $73 million 2019 budget. His main points of emphasis are for renovations at Maribel Caves Park, allocating $3.4 million for highway projects of which $1.2 million would be borrowed and creating five new positions in the Human Services Department to, in his words, “help in combating the opioid crisis.”
The tax levy for operations is nearly $30.9 million, an increase of 1.5% but a proposed 4. 7% tax rate decrease translates to the owner of a $100,000 home paying slightly less than $550 in county taxes. A two-thirds majority vote is needed to pass the budget.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30.
