Doug Free had a timely message for members of the 2019 Manitowoc Lincoln High School Football team. The Lincoln ‘grad’ and former NFL offensive lineman with the Dallas Cowboys was asked by Coach Greg Enz to be an Honorary Captain last Friday for the Notre Dame game that the Shipbuilders won, 37-0, enabling them to return to the playoffs. Free’s message to the players before the game was “Depending on the outcome of the game, this could be your last game. The biggest thing is 20 years from now, don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I would have left it on the field a little more.’”
Doug and his wife, Dorothy, whom he met while the two were students at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, now reside in Walworth County. Free has moved-on from being a football player, and now raises beef cattle. “It keeps me pretty busy,” Free told SeehaferNews.com. “It was always something I kinda knew I wanted to get back into when I got done playing football, and I’ve been blessed to be able to do that.”
Free is very impressed with the new sports turf and other renovations at Rubick Field. His high school alma-mater will travel to Milwaukee Marquette Friday night for a WIAA Level-1 playoff game.
