A Green Bay food processing plant had to be evacuated yesterday morning due to an ammonia leak. The Green Bay Metro Fire Department were called to American Foods Group at 544 Acme Street, and had the leak contained by around noon, then crews entered the facility in hazmat suits to check ammonia levels and clean up the large facility. A portion of University Avenue was closed off while the incident was being taken care of. About 1,100 workers were forced out of the building during the leak, and they watched from the street as hazardous materials crews and firefighters went to work. Assistant Fire Chief Rob Goplin praised the workers for their quick evacuation, saying “That’s a sign of a company that puts a lot of stock in their people and takes care of their people, and that’s what we want to see. It’s very helpful to us.”
