The Wisconsin Supreme Court will hear a case which could scale back the governor’s broad veto powers. The conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty is challenging four of Governor Tony Evers’ 78 partial vetoes, accusing him of improperly and unlawfully using his constitutional powers to create new laws that the state Legislature never approved. The high court’s decision is unusual because it bypasses the usual process of lawsuits working their way up through lower courts first. The intent is to stop governors from changing the intent of lawmakers by using the partial veto powers on the state budget.
