The ACLU of Wisconsin’s Campaign for Smart Justice will complete the last stop of its statewide criminal justice reform tour on Tuesday, October 15 in Green Bay. The event, which will include a presentation, panel discussion, and audience Q&A, is aimed at building support for reforms to address the epidemic of crimeless revocation and increase employment opportunities for formerly incarcerated people.
In April, the ACLU of Wisconsin released a comprehensive plan to reduce the state’s prison population by half and save hundreds of millions of dollars with reforms to the state’s criminal justice system. Among the recommendations of the report was to reduce ‘crimeless’ or technical revocations of probation and parole, where people are imprisoned for violating a rule of supervision rather than for committing a new crime. Crimeless revocation accounts for the highest percentage of new admissions to the growing Wisconsin prison population, and results in about 3,000 prison admissions each year.
The tour, “Investing in Wisconsin’s Future through Criminal Justice Reform” started in Eau Claire, then moved to Racine, Brown Deer, Oshkosh, and Wauwatosa.
