The state Department of Natural Resources has voted to rename the Peshtigo River State Forest to the Governor Earl Peshtigo State Forest. The action was taken during their board meeting held in Mishicot on Wednesday. Tony Earl served as Governor from 1983 to 1986, was a DNR Secretary in the 1970s and served in the state Assembly. The Governor Earl Peshtigo State Forest in Marinette and Oconto Counties consists of 9200 acres of forest, 3200 acres of water and features more than 25 miles of river.
The DNR Board also voted to shorten the ruffed grouse season in the northwestern two-thirds of Wisconsin by three weeks, over concerns about a dwindling population.
