Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig is looking to fill two openings in the Jail Division and would like females to occupy those positions. The county jail is down two women’s Correctional Officers because of retirements, and a Facebook post describes the full-time job as offering base pay of $19.80 an hour with benefits.
Sheriff Hartwig explains that corrections officers “wear many hats, but the best skill of all is communication, adding 90-percent of the job is talking to people and calming situations down.”
Jail division officer, Gina Behrensprung, said since she’s worked at the county jail, she estimated the female population has doubled with 4 pods now, as opposed to 2 in past years.
The sheriff said he’d also like to build up a recruitment list so that when a vacancy occurs in the near future, they’ll have candidates to call. Hartwig added, “running a jail understaffed isn’t easy, especially when there’s protocol to follow.”
