The reduction in freight rail service is said to be costing businesses in Wisconsin’s Northwoods a lot of money. The northeastern part of the state is the only region which has seen a decline in the number of freight trains over the last few years. A 2018 survey found adding 105-thousand rail cars would remove 350,000 trucks from Wisconsin roads annually. That would not only save money for the businesses, it would reduce the damage done to rural roads. Republican state Senator Tom Tiffany is suggesting the state should fund infrastructure improvements which are tied to minimum service requirements for C-N Railroad.
