Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels has issued a statement clarifying future plans for two parks on the city’s southwest side. Nickels explains there was a mistake in the mailing of a letter to residents indicating the city was discussing the potential to eliminate Halverson Park. The mayor says that has never been in the plans, but rather, Dale Street Park, two blocks away is under consideration for closure. Nickels said Halverson is still getting a fenced-in Dog Park, while Kerry/Red Arrow Products has adopted the park for future upgrades.
The reason Dale Street Park is being considered for elimination is so the city can focus more dollars on other parks with higher usage. Manitowoc and a private business will be investing resources in Halverson Park over the next few years and the Dale Street location is just a block away from Franklin Elementary School, which has park amenities on its’ grounds.
The city wants to have a discussion with neighbors about the future of Dale Street Park, which is why the letters went out. Unfortunately, the wrong park was listed in the letter. The meeting to discuss park plans is scheduled for tomorrow evening at 5:30 in Council Chambers at City Hall.
