All school children in the lakeshore area are returning to the classroom this week. One of the traditions in the planning process for parents is packing a school lunch from home. Abbey Bubolz is a Manitowoc Registered Dietician, and she said when packing a lunch, the goal should be to include all 4 food groups. Those groups are fruits, veggies, protein, and some sort of starch or carbohydrate. “I think where we get stuck is we kind of get in the same rut of it’s either a sandwich or we don’t know what to do,” she explained. Bubolz suggests rather than preparing a traditional sandwich for your children, change up the type of bread and go with a wrap or pita, instead to help keep things fresh and different.
She also cautions against consumption of sugary beverages, because “Kids fill up on juice, soda or energy drinks, and may not actually get the nutrients that they need from food.” She says instead that water or milk would “be ideal”.
