The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it counted 978 gray wolves during the annual census last April. That’s a one-percent increase and an indicator that the state’s gray wolf population may have stabilized. As recently as 1980, there were just 25 wolves in the state and a federal judge placed the gray wolf on the endangered species list five years ago. An effort has now been launched to de-list it.
