Most people know someone who has died serving our country in the military, and for the families of those people, it can be a very hard loss to deal with. The group Being There, Reaching Out, based out of Milwaukee, aims to help those families cope with their loss. Saturday, August 24 the group is hosting an event called Walk for the Fallen at Neshotah Park in Two Rivers. Two Rivers native Brenda Novak got involved with Being There after her son, Specialist Shaun Novak, died while serving in Iraq. Novak’s son was deployed to Iraq in 2006, and was killed by a roadside bomb, along with three of his fellow infantrymen.
The Walk for the Fallen is typically held in Milwaukee, but Brenda explained that they added walk in Two Rivers so those who don’t live near Milwaukee would have an event they could more easily attend. Registration for Walk for the Fallen will begin at 9:00 am at the Jaycee Shelter Pavilion at Neshotah Park, with the walk beginning at 10:00 am. In conjunction with the walk, volunteers set up 400 boots for Wisconsin Families of the Fallen at Central Park in Two Rivers. That display will be there through Sunday morning.
