Word came earlier this week of a significant school-bus driver shortage in Wisconsin. Seehafer News contacted Steve Roekle of Brandt Buses, Inc. in Manitowoc and asked him ‘why’ the shortage exists.
“I think part of it is the economy. The unemployment rate is so low that we, like all the other companies, are fighting for employees. In addition to just hire a regular employee, there’s barriers of entry to a school bus driver.”
Roekle explains what those barriers are, “You have to pass a background check, a drug test and a motor vehicle record check. In addition, you have to have a CDL (commercial driver’s license) which includes taking a physical.”
Roekle went on to list some of the positives of being a school bus driver. “It is a fantastic part-time job. It’s part-time work where you don’t have to work nights, weekends or holidays and the summers are off.”
Steve Roekle said it’s perfect for retired individuals, or provides a second income for someone with a family whose children go to school. He added it is a wonderful opportunity to gain some extra income. For more information on becoming a bus driver, contact Brandt Buses at 682-8823.
